I am quite happy with my latest crafting project, an inuit ulu knife. I didn´t make an exact replica of a particular knife (there is a large number of different geographic styles and constructions among different inuit populations), but a distinct version based on various ulus I´ve seen, especially from some areas of Alaska. It works extremely well, the handle lies soft and smooth in the hand, the round one-sided cutting edge slices well through vegetables, bread and hard smoked sausage as well, and I still even didn´t give it its final sharpening. The handle is made from pine, not exactly my favourite kind of wood for a knife handle, but authentic for an inuit artifact, as driftwood (pine in particular) was usually the only available source of wood in the more northern areas. I soaked the wood in linseed oil to make it more resistant against moisture, as this was from the very beginning meant to be a functional kitchen knife.
